Value-chain Support

Better informed customers and suppliers translates into better performance for an organization.  Effective training initiatives set their sites on participants throughout the value-chain of an organization.  Orbital RPM encourages clients to split their efforts on educating the people that buy their products or services, the suppliers they depend on to perform and internal employees.

Orbital RPM’s Value-chain Support ensures that the on-going needs of customers and vendors are being met.  Optimize the entire value-chain and the organization at the center will reap the rewards.

Training Evaluation

Are your learning and development initiatives worth the investment?

Answering this question is the holy grail for training professionals around the world.  Most people attempting to answer this question, though, are using an outdated model and methodology that is unlikely to ever yield an accurate result.

Orbital RPM uses recent research and a 21st century model to determine if learning and development initiatives in your organization are having the desired effect.  In addition, we specialize in being able to quantify the results in the language of a CFO so that learning becomes an investment rather than a cost.

The reasons for evaluating learning and development can be grouped into three categories:

  • Decision-making :: determing if the methods and content being used is a foundation of evaluation

  • Feedback :: communicating lessons to learners and staff about the relevancy, quality or impact of a learning initiative is an important step for continuous improvement
  • Marketing :: promoting the successfulness of learning initiatives to customers, employees and recruits ensures long-term interest and resource allocation from everyone involved

When these areas are focused within an overall knowledge strategy a robust model for evaluation emerges. The model allows the organization to determine the best method for evaluating learning based on the results they desire.

Train-the-Trainer

Workshops facilitated by internal presenters bring instant credibility to any subject.  Participants benefit from material that is reflective of their culture, delivered in their language and relevant to their world.  Organizations benefit from not having to spend the time and money getting an external presenter briefed on the norms and history of the organization and continuously bringing them back.

Orbital RPM provides train-the-trainer programs for most of the instructor-led workshops we offer. This allows an organization to leverage their internal knowledge while teaching others.  Train-the-trainer sessions are a combination of modeling, practicing and critiquing with our experienced staff of professional facilitators and coaches.

Technology Consulting

A piece related to the learning revolution we are part of is the technology that comes with it.  Some vendors claim their software is the cure to all of the needs of learning and development.  Orbital RPM only uses technology as a catalyst and support for learning and development - not the primary driver of it.

Aware that new tools can be intimidating, we specialize in working with a wide-array of vendors and brands.  Not aligning with specific software allows us to maintain our open-source approach and focus more on the process that leverages the benefits of any software.  If you are currently using or have purchased a software package meant for learning and development we can help optimize its use.

Similarly, if you are looking for the right software for your needs we can provide unbiased insight on the options in the market.  Orbital RPM can help at any point in the procurement lifecycle by working with user groups, determining required functionality and facilitating implementation.  Orbital RPM can also leverage our relationship with various vendors to help evaluate and select the system that is right for your organization.

Orbital RPM offers consulting on the use and selection of the following:

  • Blogs
  • Social Software
  • Rapid e-Learning
  • RSS
  • Wikis
  • LMS
  • LCMS
  • Rapid e-Learning Development

Social Network Support

The social networks running throughout organizations are where knowledge travels.  When these pathways are clear communication flows freely between employees, customers and suppliers.

This pattern of exchange is necessary for people to get information in the moment and not have to wait until the next scheduled training class.  Supporting these networks allows for the continuous quick exchange of insight and ideas throughout an organization’s value-chain.

Orbital RPM’s Social Network Support service cultivates the naturally existing social networks in organizations.  Supportive tasks can be as little as providing time and space for people to meet more formally or as much as implementing software that complements the way we naturally communicate and collaborate.  Orbital RPM provides expertise all along the basic to complex continuum of supporting social networks.

Performance Support Tools

Every time you use the Help window on your computer or check a grocery list you are using a performance support tool.  They can be simple or savvy as long as they are effective.

People retain and use knowledge significantly more when they are provided with tools that support and reinforce lessons they have learned.  Orbital RPM uses creativity and experience to design the right performance support tools for everyone that your organization depends on.  Following are some examples of tools we have used:

  • Podcasting
  • Audio CDs
  • DVDs
  • Desk references
  • Online communities
  • Conference calls
  • Job aids
  • Workbooks
  • Wallet cards
  • Pre-work

We also offer our custom support tools to target any organization’s unique learning needs.

Orbital RPM helps learning stick with performance support tools.  These reinforcers help provide information, support concepts and guide decision-making.  Introduced before, during and after learning initiatives, performance support tools provide critical information at the time it is needed – no matter what time that is.

Knowledge Management

From a large conference to a small lunch group, any gathering of people from your value-chain is a potential source of rich organizational data.  Allocating resources and cultivating the environment that supports the healthy exchange of this data and using it in the future will ensure that your organization learns from its actions.

Orbital RPM’s Knowledge Management service helps organizations capture and catalog organizational knowledge in a way that is most useful to the end users.  Many hold the dangerous perception that knowledge management is successful because of software.  Software provides efficiency and a repository.  Neither matters when people do not participate. Orbital RPM’s approach focuses more on the processes and tools that get people engaged and sharing information rather than a specific software package in which to store it.

Collecting, organizing and disseminating relevant information when needed is the new role of learning practitioners.  They can be more strategic in the organization by shifting their role from one where content is pushed to one where relevant information is made available to pull.

Orbital RPM works with your team to transform the training function into one that offers a strategic asset to the rest of the organization.  We help training departments become learning centers.

Incentive Alignment

Measurement drives behaviors.

Aligning measurement systems to the behaviors that create more value for the organization fosters a culture where people take advantage of the learning tools and opportunities they have because they want the company to do well for their own sake.  Orbital RPM helps instill an intrinsic motivation to continuously learn and improve.

What knowledge and skills will help achieve the goals and vision of your organization?  We integrate our services and solutions with any of the metrics an organization has already deemed critical to its success.  We also work within the Performance Management System of any organization.

In need of an incentive overhaul?

Orbital RPM partners with a financial consulting firm to wrap learning solutions around the economic models that most effectively create shareholder value.  Using Economic Value-Added (EVA) as the foundation serves as a great model for providing incentives to those in an organization to perform in ways that directly add value to your shareholders.  We work closely with our partnering firm to ensure that the right knowledge and skills are developed in alignment with the new incentive structure.

Coaching

Coaches are the ultimate in accountability.  Depending on the need, they can be motivators, challengers, confidantes or guides.  Orbital RPM’s professional coaches offer support that help maintain many of our services and solutions.  Some examples are as follows:

  • Action Learning coach: When an action learning team is assembled to complete a task, the team takes care of the ‘action’ while the coach looks after the ‘learning.’  Orbital RPM’s action learning coaches play an integral role in the learning and development of the entire team.

  • Communities of Practice coordinator coach: Communities need coordinators if they are to survive and thrive.  Playing the role of a community coordinator is time-intensive and complex.  Orbital RPM offers coaching assistance to the coordinator assigned to each community to serve as a guide or sounding board for ideas.

  • Executive Development coach: It’s lonely at the top.  Research has shown that the further up in an organization someone gets the less honest feedback and input they will receive.  Unbiased feedback and perspective are just what is needed to continue improving and that is where Orbital RPM can help.  We offer executive coaches for all higher-level positions regardless of the need.

Action Learning

What would be the value of solving organizational issues while developing essential competencies?  This is precisely the outcome of action learning.

One phrase that most people can remember hearing from a boss, peer, parent or anyone that was trying to impart advice is, “Trust me. I know from experience.” This is much more convincing than, “Trust me. I heard it at a conference.”

Experiences cement lessons in our minds because they impact us at emotional, physical and cognitive levels.  When experiences can be leveraged in learning and development, these experiences become the most lasting and effective developmental times in people’s careers.

Action learning is the practice of structuring learning events around real world application and experience.  Action learning teams are charged with solving a real issue while a learning coach observes throughout the process to remind them of their team and personal development goals.  The team ensures execution on the assigned issue while the coach ensures that the intended learning and development happens in the process.

Orbital RPM uses action learning to embed the competencies for development at any level of an organization.  Many of the action learning teams we assemble are cross-functional and represent different levels of the organization so that participants get a systems-level view of the decisions they make.

Orbital RPM also utilizes tools from our informal learning service that aid in the collaboration and productivity of the action learning teams.  By combining aspects of our wide variety of learning services, Orbital RPM is able to create a truly unique and long-lasting learning and development experience for all involved.

Communities of Practice

Tips, best practices and advice already flow through most organizations.  Some of the informal interactions that happen around the proverbial water cooler are where the most useful information gets transferred.

It happens in the break room, out to lunch or via a response to an email question.  People learn informally and peers are an excellent source for this just-in-time information as they can sympathize with situations and offer input from their experiences.

Orbital RPM adds strategy and structure to this informal organizational element that allows people to learn more from those at their level.  We help cultivate communities of practice, or groups of people who share their tips and insights with others in the same role or with the same objectives.  Mature communities are also adept at storing the information that is most useful to them, making communities of practice an effective method for knowledge management.

Communities at some level already exist in most organizations.  They can be as simple as people that meet for lunch once a month or as formal as a group that reserves space to meet weekly and communicates on-line regularly between meetings.  What many community members don’t realize is that this is where they get their best information.  Orbital RPM helps early communities evolve into something greater and mature communities thrive.  We facilitate their cultivation and support so that they can produce benefits for larger groups and the organization.

For executives we offer membership in communities of practice that are composed of other executives from similar but non-competing organizations.

For all other employees we specialize in cultivating communities of practice as a forum for them to learn from their peers, develop their own solutions and add more value to their employer. These groups may also include representatives from the organization’s value-chain.

For more information on how Orbital RPM identifies potential communities of practice please read about our Social Network Analysis service.

Conference Planning

Are you planning a company conference?  Orbital RPM can help.

Many participants leaving a company conference will remark that the greatest value they received was from interacting with one another on breaks or at meals.  When the intellectual capital of an organization is assembled in one location, back-to-back speakers and workshops of content is not the best way for it to be leveraged.

Orbital RPM helps organizations design conference schedules that build time in to maximize the golden opportunity of having co-workers together in a learning environment.

Informal Learning Tools

80% of learning happens informally and Orbital RPM offers consulting on tools that facilitate this exchange. From true collaboration to searching, updating others to keeping in touch, advancements in technology are providing tools that favor people’s informal approach to learning.

The advent of the Internet ushered in a wave of productivity and access to information that took the world by storm. Websites, email and networks allowed people to find information and communicate in ways never before imagined. As with the first version of anything, though, users have begun to experience limitations from the initial products of the information age and have developed the new and improved versions.

The next iteration of the Internet has been dubbed Web 2.0 and Orbital RPM offers consulting on how best to integrate some of these new tools into your organization:

Social Software keep people connected and interacting
Blogs the latest in keeping others updated and informed
Wikis enable true collaboration and knowledge management
Podcasts savvy yet simple technology to engage, inform and entertain
RSS feeds allow everyone to receive information customized to their needs
Tags optimize searches with a new method for finding information

With the right application and combination of these tools, informal learning in organizations is enabled and supported. Orbital RPM helps organizations determine which tools are most suited for their needs and how to implement them.

Knowledge Transfer

NASA’s Lunar Program lost critical knowledge during the downsizing craze of the 1990s when Saturn 5 engineers were encouraged to take early retirement.  One NASA manager confided, “If we want to go to the moon again, we’ll be starting from scratch.  All of that knowledge has disappeared.  It would take at least as long and cost at least as much to go back.”

When people leave an organization, whether through retirement or before, an immense amount of experience, tips, and stories goes with them.  Proactive organizations are finding and sharing that knowledge before it’s gone.

Orbital RPM uses a process that captures and transfers the tacit knowledge that organizations need to avoid re-inventing the wheel, or in some cases, something much more sophisticated.  Our process uncovers knowledge brokers in organizations and highlights natural starting points for our Knowledge Transfer service by identifying points where immediate attention is needed and where resources can be best leveraged.

Mobile Learning

Meet people where they learn. If employees are always on the go their critical information should be as well.  Recent advancements in technology allow information to be put into the hands of those who need it, no matter where they are.

Mobile learning is emerging as another essential component that belongs in the arsenal of organizational learning professionals.  Orbital RPM offers Podcasts, CDs, DVDs, professional video recording and editing and other modes of media to calibrate your learning solution to the speed and dispersion of your organization.

Rapid e-Learning

Do things change quickly in your organization?  Do people often need updated information in a short amount of time?
For projects such as keeping the field updated on the latest features of a product, disseminating corporate initiatives or keeping suppliers and customers engaged in the latest activities of the organization the solution needs to be fast and affordable.

Traditional e-learning brings with it a timeline and financial requirement that are not suited for topics that need to be addressed quickly, are frequently changing or have a low budget.

Orbital RPM works with clients to produce rapid e-learning.  Rapid e-learning uses an accelerated design process and technology to dramatically increase the speed at which new modules reach their audience.  This allows our clients to economically get information into the hands of everyone in their value-chain at the moment they need it.

Simulations

The United States Air Force uses flight simulators extensively for training.  It’s not unusual for pilots to spend several hundred hours in a simulator before ever sitting behind the controls of the real thing.  When they do get to fly, though, pilots are so accustomed to the behavior of the airplane that the risk of danger and cost of training are greatly reduced.

Orbital RPM applies these same principles to organizational learning.  By practicing in a controlled environment, participants can experiment, make mistakes and improve under the direction of peers or a coach.

Orbital RPM offers simulations for all levels of your organization.  Since there is commonality between executive roles at different organizations the only templated simulation we offer is for executives.  Custom simulations can be designed for any other organizational need.

On-camera Executive interviews:

Can you successfully explain what your company does in under 30 seconds to the casual inquirer? On camera?

How would you respond to a relentless media personality that has gotten word of some of your organization’s most pressing challenges and wants to chat? On camera?

An executive’s ability to communicate is tantamount to their effectiveness.  Whether it is to a potential client in the elevator, to the organization or in a grueling interview, executives need to be able to speak with confidence and laser-like precision when conveying their strategy, feelings and projections.

Orbital RPM prepares executives for these occasions by using a video camera, an interviewer and a professional coach. Each session includes real-time feedback and enough tries until it is right.  Participants also receive a DVD of their performance that has been edited to show highlights of good practices, areas for improvement and any unforgettable moments.  The final cuts can also be used as performance support tools, as a component of new-hire integration or posted on the organization’s website or intranet.

Custom Simulations:

Custom simulations for all other organizational levels are designed for each unique client.

Value-chain Learning

What should your customers know to better utilize your product or service?  What should your suppliers know about you in order to optimize your interaction?

People don’t have to be part of your organization to impact its success.  Your organization’s success depends on who you buy from, who you sell to and who you employ. Some would argue that educating the part of your value-chain not represented by your organization deserves a higher percentage of the overall training budget.

Orbital RPM’s Value-chain Learning service extends beyond the boundary of traditional learning practitioners.  The result of including your value-chain in your learning initiatives also double as an effective marketing platform.  Marketing, after all, is educating others about an organization.

Was the tutorial with your new cell phone helpful?  Have you ever accessed an on-line forum for a question about a product or software?  These are both examples of companies that have invested in learning for their customers.

Massive retailers that dictate how suppliers manage their own inventory have invested in the learning of their vendors. Better performing vendors or suppliers means the opportunity to add more value to the customer.

Orbital RPM offers learning services that extend beyond your organization to encompass your entire value-chain. Some examples are:

  • Customers     What would allow your customers to better utilize your product or service? What would you educate them on if you could?
  • Suppliers     How could your vendor relationships benefit from access to better information?  How can you make life easier for each other?
  • Employees     What would be the benefit of employees learning from and teaching the customers and suppliers of the organization?  How can this natural process best be supported?

Orbital RPM helps extend learning beyond an organization and into the space of the value-chain.  Our wide variety of learning services can be used to maximize an organization’s performance by targeting everyone that impacts success, not just employees.

On-line Surveys

Want to know what’s on everyone’s mind?  Ask them.

On-line surveys are an easy and cost effective way to gather data from an organization’s entire value-chain or any specific piece of it.  On-line surveys produce quantitative and/or qualitative responses from anyone with email.  The aggregation of this data provides insight to the organization from multiple angles allowing our Solution Directors to gather the precise type of data they need.

Orbital RPM uses surveys throughout our solutions and teaches clients the best way to leverage surveys internally and externally going forward.

Personal Assessments

Many distributors of personal assessments claim to be able to solve the challenges in organizations today by using one or a combination of their assessments.  As with most learning products on the market, assessments are effective only when used as part of a strategic process.

Orbital RPM uses personal assessments as intentional pieces in an overall solution.  Inserted at the right time personal assessments provide current self-awareness and future goals to ignite and sustain a learning solution.

Orbital RPM’s open-source approach focuses more on the process that leverages intended results rather than a specific type of assessment. We are familiar with a wide range of vendors and brands of personal assessments and would be happy to answer any questions on a selection decision you are facing. Our process has been successful with the following:

  • DISC [Behavioral Styles]

  • Myers-Briggs Type Indicator [MBTI]

  • Highlands Ability Battery

  • FIRO-B

  • PIAV [Workplace Motivators]

  • Various 360º assessments

If you are looking to purchase assessments we offer those listed above.

Scenario Planning

What happens when the anticipated environment, market or product in a strategic plan doesn’t turn out as planned?

Cast a wide net for the vision of your organization’s future and be confident in your actions and decisions today.  Scenario planning requires participants to envision a variety of potential scenarios where their organization may be in the future and determine the common denominators that will help them succeed in all of the possible futures.

Scenario planning has a far reaching effect on organizations.  Output from a scenario planning session impacts decisions in hiring, marketing, expansion, projects, budgeting and countless other areas.

Orbital RPM’s Scenario Planning service allows an organization to determine what skills and knowledge employees, customers and suppliers need in order to be prepared for how the organization may look in the future.

Social Network Analysis

What typically happens when someone has a question about how something works in an organization?  Most people don’t wait for the next scheduled training class.  They ask someone they think will have the answer.

80% of learning is informal.  Information travels through the unofficial channels of an organization where people go to access and absorb it.  Orbital RPM’s Social Network Analysis service uncovers these channels so that they can be supported and maintained.  Our detailed process and output highlight natural starting points for where to allocate resources and time that will have the best chances of starting or sustaining a thriving knowledge community.

Providing a view of where people go for answers reveals the critical personnel in organizations regardless of their title.  An administrative assistant may turn out to be the crucial link between two dispersed departments.  A junior researcher may be keeping multiple divisions informed about the latest developments on a project for which all of the divisions are accountable.

The side benefits of Orbital RPM’s Social Network Analysis are numerous.  The same social network maps that are produced by our process can also be used for decisions on promotions, budgets, knowledge transfer and countless other areas.

Orbital RPM’s Social Network Analysis helps clients discover how information flows through their organization and how to support the healthiest and most productive routes.

Portfolio Review

Are your investments in learning and development diversified and assembled to have the maximum impact?  Orbital RPM shows where allocations in training can be the most effective.

Orbital RPM’s Training Check-up is an in-depth analysis that looks at data from your learning portfolio. As with any investment strategy we consider diversity, risk, and, of course, potential for return.

Explore Orbital RPM’s interactive Learning Paths page for a look at how we impact learning and development within different groups that compose the value-chain of an organization.

Value-chain Analysis

Who is responsible for your organization’s success?  Customers?  Employees?  How about suppliers?

Customers that are not well informed about your products or services can impact your customer service department. Suppliers that do not integrate well with an organization’s processes affect that organization’s ability to perform.

Optimizing the performance of an organization requires a careful look at its entire value-chain.  Orbital RPM’s Value-chain Analysis provides a map of who an organization interacts with in order to perform.  This map is used to determine the best insertion points for learning solutions that permeate and optimize the entire value-chain in an organization.

Needs Analysis

Determining the right direction for learning and development means the difference between a captive audience and a group of multi-taskers.

Adult learners need to have input on a learning solution in order to maximize the impact. Orbital RPM has pioneered a process that goes beyond the participant level and requests insight on learning and development needs from groups operating within and with an organization.

Learning happens when people are given information that is immediately applicable. ‘Just-in-time’ not ‘just-in-case.’ With a well-rounded view of the learning needs of participants, Orbital RPM includes content and methodologies that transfer the needed skills and knowledge back to daily life right away.

Focus Groups

Focus groups are small groups of people that are gathered to share their opinions and insight on a particular topic or issue. Focus groups, whether composed of just internal employees or of representatives of your entire value-chain are a rich source of information.

Orbital RPM often convenes focus groups after launching and analyzing on-line surveys in order to provide more clarity on topics that emerged in the survey data.

Services

Orbital RPM offers a broad range of consulting services that address the learning and development needs of an organization in the three areas below. Please check our solutions page for information on how our services are combined to address specific needs.

Orbital Outsourcing

Orbital RPM knows learning and development.  We provide the thought leadership, resources and best practices of a Chief Learning Officer [CLO] via outsourcing; allowing our clients to focus on the core functions of their organizations.

In today’s highly competitive business environment companies are continually seeking ways to keep their business lean and ahead of the competition.  Successful companies are now outsourcing non-core functions as a way of lowering costs and keeping pace with industry best practices.

orbitalOUTSOURCING provides learning and development outsourcing to companies that are seeking the benefits of proven learning and development practices without the cost and obligation of hiring additional employees.

Orbital Workspace

Office layout and arrangement has a significant impact on how we work together.  orbitalWORKSPACE employs the latest techniques in workplace configuration and design so that your space is maximized for the type of work your organization performs.

Orbital Change

Managing change largely depends on getting the right information to the right people.  Replace traditional change management techniques with a more progressive targeted approach that has been proven to yield greater success more efficiently.

Orbital Change is a revolutionary take on the field of change management.  Drawing on the most up-to-date methodology to determine and affect how information makes its way through an organization, Orbital RPM offers a way to manage change in your organization that will foster genuine support and adoption.

Orbital Development

True development results in lasting changes in mindset, behavior and beliefs.

Personal development that impacts the organization requires aligning with the mindsets and behaviors that improve performance.

Orbital RPM uses techniques targeted to various levels in an organization and applies them to the mindsets and behaviors that will generate success.

Orbital RPM offers development solutions for the groups listed below:

Executive Development    Ensure executives are leveraging best practices, executing their knowledge strategy and communicating effectively about, and to, their organization.
Leadership and Management Development    Develop managers and leaders that are optimized to perform in your organization by having them solve critical issues while being guided according to predetermined competencies or personal development plans.
Sales Force Development    Preserve critical time in the field and give salespeople what they need to perform by focusing content on a small group of interpersonal skills and providing easy access to needed information.
Custom Development    We offer services that can be tailored to ensure effective development at any level of an organization.

Orbital Learning

Learning for the workforce of today and tomorrow requires easy access to necessary information rather than instruction. If people have the tools and support to learn they do not need much training.

The ability to access and transfer information just-in-time is critical to learning and to an organization’s success. This includes information for employees, customers, suppliers or anyone in an organization’s value-chain.

The orbitalLEARNING solution gets the right information into the right heads at the right time. We replace the traditional supply-based model of training, where employees get what was prescribed for them, with a demand-based model of learning, where everyone can find what they need when they need it.

People frequently search for information pertaining to an organization that they are involved with. It may be a salesperson looking for case studies similar to the account they are targeting or a potential customer looking for more information about a product or service. Organization’s perform better when people find what they need.

Providing employees with easy access to the knowledge critical to their performance gives them the agility that the self-directed learners of today desire. Including your entire value-chain in the learning process circulates information to potential and current customers and suppliers and prepares them to interact with your organization.

Orbital RPM specializes in embedding state-of-the-art learning methods and technologies within down-to-earth daily practices that together permeate the internal and external walls of any organization.

Key Benefits of the orbitalLEARNING Solution:

  • Give your entire value-chain the information they need to perform
  • Transition from a supply-based model of training to a demand-based model of learning
  • Enable just-in-time access to critical information

Orbital Onboarding

A well planned new-hire integration process has been proven to increase productivity and retention.  People make a big decision in their life when they join an organization.  They begin evaluating if the right decision was made as soon as they walk in the door.  By showing an upfront commitment to them and to learning, new-hires will be confident in their decision to join your organization, motivated to produce their best work immediately and more likely to stay.

New-hires want to be productive.  They want to start contributing right away.  Replace paperwork and videos with an agenda that gets people engaged and excited about their new role.  Invest in them early and they’ll want to stay longer.

The orbitalONBOARDING solution helps organizations make orientation an experience that gives new-hires the ability to succeed.  This creates an on-boarding process that energizes, integrates and retains the newest members of your team.
